The American Heart Association's Heart of Diabetes, which is a free program that educates people with diabetes about their risk of cardiovascular disease, has been around for awhile. What's new, however, is a special emphasis on the diabetes educator.

When you get a moment, check out the special section on the Heart of Diabetes Web site at www.s2mw.com/aha/hodprologin.asp, which was designed especially for diabetes educators. It includes downloadable tools, speakers' kits, and patient education information. Many of these items, including The Heart of Diabetes brochure and the 12-week activity program, have been favorably reviewed by AADE.

You can also encourage your patients to become registered users or Thrivers of the Heart of Diabetes. It's free for them to join, and they will receive informative monthly newsletters and will have access to helpful tools and tips.

AADE fully supports this campaign, which has been available since 1998 and is funded by an unrestricted educational grant by Takeda Pharmaceuticals.

In winter 2005, AADE joined forces with Lifescan, Inc, on a public awareness campaign designed to reinforce the message that people with diabetes can and should take steps to manage their disease before it's too late.

The campaign features moving TV and radio public service announcements (PSAs) with the late Johnny Cash's well-known, Grammy-winning daughter, Rosanne. In the spots, she poignantly discusses her father's battle against diabetes and the warning signs he did not heed, which ultimately contributed to his death.

The PSAs direct the public to visit www.healthywithdiabetes.org, where they can obtain a free downloadable workbook on how to manage blood glucose on a daily basis. The workbook features a patient-friendly overview of diabetes, including the major forms of the disease and typical symptoms. It also provides information on how to manage diabetes, including the importance of working with a diabetes educator. The 60-second TV PSA itself is also available for viewing on the site.

While the campaign has done extremely well during the year—routinely ranking in the top 5% of the approximately 450 Nielsen-rated PSA campaigns—it's been given a new lease on life with the release of Walk the Line, the new movie about Johnny Cash. If you haven't yet been on the Web site or viewed the PSA, then definitely do so now.

This month's issue brief requests that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services include several critically important provisions to allow blood glucose monitoring systems to be included in the competitive bidding program established by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003. You can view the issue paper at www.diabeteseducator.org/pdf/issue_brief_bidding.pdf.

Are you thinking about making a career move but are not sure how to approach it? Position yourself for professional and personal excellence!

Set Realistic Goals for Yourself
One morning you wake up and realize you are head to head with the unknown. How can you move past this and reengage your ability to effectively interact with people? Out there is the right job for you: all you need to do is find it! Try to set realistic expectations and goals for yourself, so you are not discouraged or disappointed.

Write a Resume That Gets You in the Door
Your resume is a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview. If it is doing what it is supposed to do, it worked. If it didn't, it isn't an effective resume. A resume is an advertisement, nothing more, nothing less. Get a friend or colleague to review your resume. If they can't understand it, neither can a potential employer.

Reevaluate Your Approach
Examine what you've been good at in the past, understand where you are today, and set goals for tomorrow! Apply a bit of planning; it will pay off immensely. Whatever your workweek is like, you can certainly recognize and attain your goals if you allow yourself.

Pick Up the Habits of a Highly Effective Job Seeker

  • Be specific: Make sure your resume and relevant skills match the opportunity.
  • Be honest: Stretching the truth is never a good idea and often times will be uncovered.
  • Be precise: Check and recheck your resume and cover letter.
  • Be polite: Be sure the employer can tell you are interested, qualified, and available.
  • Be responsive: Employers expect interested candidates to be prompt and punctual.

Have you ever needed extra continuing education hours for any number of reasons including credential recertification or ADA Program Recognition but couldn't find a convenient and affordable way to attain them? AADE listened to members who communicated these concerns and now have a number of programs available online for free!

Through the generous support of General Mills, Novo Nordisk, and Pfizer Inc, AADE is able to offer members the ability to earn continuing education hours online in a number of different subject areas including diabetes and menopause, insulin analogs, blood glucose monitoring, insulin delivery systems, whole-grain consumption, heart disease, cultural diversity and diabetes treatment, diabetic ketoacidosis, and more.

After reviewing the subject matter and completing the online posttest, participants instantly receive an online certificate that can be printed and used for proof of credit.

AADE also has a searchable online database for continuing education opportunities around the country that have been approved for credit by AADE's Approver Unit. Check and see if there are any programs in your area.

Both of these continuing education opportunities can be found in the Continuing Education section (www.diabeteseducator.org/ContinuingEducationCE/CEOnline.shtml) of AADE's Web site.
