AADE has joined with a number of groups advocating for increased attention for pregnant women at risk for gestational diabetes. In August, we sent a letter of support to Senator Hillary Clinton, who on September 20, introduced the Gestational Diabetes Act of 2006, S. 3914, legislation to create a Research Advisory Committee headed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Research Advisory Committee will be charged with developing multisite gestational diabetes research projects to expand and enhance monitoring of gestational diabetes. This bill also seeks to track mothers who had gestational diabetes and develop methods to prevent their development of type 2 diabetes.

Time is money, and if you don't know the facts on reimbursement, it can cost you! The new online AADE Reimbursement Guide for Diabetes Educators is a must-have resource for any health care worker providing educational services to people with diabetes. Reimbursement is a difficult subject to understand, and AADE wants to make sure you have the facts at your fingertips. AADE's online Reimbursement Guide consists of 6 Web-based modules that you can access over the Internet.
Module 1 is now available to AADE members at no charge as a member benefit. Nonmembers must join AADE to take advantage of this exciting new product. Other modules will be available soon. Please go to www.diabeteseducator.org for the latest information. Supported by an educational grant from Abbott Diabetes Care, a proud sponsor of the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
The AADE External Materials Review Unit would like you to consider joining your colleagues as a volunteer on the Expert Peer Review Panel, which examines educational materials such as pamphlets, brochures, books, manuals, videos, newsletters, and Web sites for diabetes information accuracy, reading level, appropriateness for the audience, and cultural sensitivity. Submissions usually come from AADE chapters, publishing companies, and pharmaceutical companies. If they pass the review, they're given the AADE "Favorably Reviewed" seal to place on the approved educational materials. Aside from helping AADE, there are many benefits to being an expert peer reviewer. First, you receive valuable training, which many have found useful in their day jobs as well. Being a volunteer reviewer also improves your analytical skills, provides you a forum to network with fellow diabetes educators, and gives you the ability to view new materials before they are released. This position is for 1 year, ending on June 30, 2007. All we ask is for volunteers to commit to reviewing a minimum of 2 projects during their year. Time commitment per project is about 2 hours. If this volunteer opportunity sounds interesting to you, please contact Sarah Nicholaev, Accreditation Project Coordinator, at snicholaev{at}aadenet.org, or call her at (312) 601-4821.
