The 7 Step Diabetes Fitness Plan
Sheri R. Colberg, PhD. Publisher: Marlow & Company, New York, New
York. Date of Publication: 2006. Price: $15.95
The intended audience for The 7 Step Diabetes Fitness Plan is individuals with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes; however, it is also a great resource for diabetes educators and supportive others who want to know more about being fit and living well with diabetes. This is really much more than a physical activity/exercise book. It is a comprehensive guide that also covers healthy eating, emotions, motivation, and medications. The author emphasizes that all of these aspects of diabetes management are essential for becoming healthy and fit and for controlling or preventing type 2 diabetes. Sheri R. Colberg, PhD, is a well-known exercise physiologist and author. She is an associate professor of exercise science at Old Dominion University and is the author of 2 other books: The Diabetic Athlete and Diabetes-Free Kids. She has had type 1 diabetes for 38 years and is an active member of the Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association (DESA). The 7 Step Diabetes Fitness Plan covers 7 basic steps the author has identified as essential to preventing and controlling diabetes through fitness. Each chapter comprehensively covers 1 of the 7 steps and provides a wealth of information. Everything from pathophysiology of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, blood glucose control with exercise, lifestyle physical activity guidelines, and principles of safe and effective exercise training are addressed. The chapter titled "Adopt an Optimal Eating Plan" offers a detailed discussion of nutrition recommendations and healthy eating guidelines and also includes information about the glycemic index, glycemic load, and the "polymeal." The medications chapter not only covers injectable and oral glucose-lowering medications but also provides information about numerous nutrition supplements. The chapter "Get Emotionally Fit" recognizes that coping with a chronic disease such as diabetes can contribute to emotional concerns and provides helpful and encouraging coping tips. The final chapter, "Stay Motivated for a Lifetime," is equally helpful and encouraging. Technical and medical terms are found in bold print throughout the book. The bold print is a prompt to check the glossary if a term is unfamiliar. For those who want quick information bytes and less detail, highlighted tips and bullet point guidelines throughout each chapter and bottom line summaries at the end of the chapters are very useful. The book includes 5 appendices, a glossary, a suggested reading list, and references. These are all great resources. The "Become Even More Fit" chapter has nicely illustrated and well-explained strengthening and stretching exercises that individuals can do with simple equipment in their own homes. This is a very practical, how-to section. Fun, topic-related cartoons at the beginning of each chapter add a nice touch of humor. I highly recommend The 7 Step Diabetes Fitness Plan as an up-to-date resource for health care professionals who counsel people with diabetes or prediabetes and for patients whom they advise. It is best suited to individuals who are able to comprehend fairly complex information and desire to know details about physiology and diabetes management. It may overwhelm those who need more basic information. A special strength of this book is the understanding and experience that the author, as an individual with diabetes, shares with her readers. For example, some very sage advice she offers is, "So if you can't beat it [diabetes], the best thing to do is live well with it." In this book, she gives readers the resources and encouragement to do just that!
